A Natural History of the Senses Relief Sculpture

Fire & Ice

Cardstock paper, acrylic paint, gel medium, hot glue, masking tape

17" x 14" x 1"

The sculpture entitled Fire & Ice explores ideas of color theory and shape theory. It also explores different textures with the different textures the shapes make. There are two sculptures that make up the full relief sculpture, and each of the two sculptures are supposed to be opposite from the other. One sculpture was created with soft, round edges and warm colors. The other was created with rough, jagged edges and cool/darker colors. I did research about how certain shapes and colors are said to evoke certain feelings within a viewer. I found that warmer colors and softer edges are associated with more positive feelings, while jagged shapes and cooler colors are associated with more negative feelings. This is an important concept to explore because we see colors and shapes everywhere, and colors and shapes can be manipulative when in comes to emotions and feelings.

Memento

Memory Mint

Air dry clay, green and white Winsor & Newton inks

2" x 3" x 2"

This sculpture represents a memory associated with my grandfather, specifically from the year 2017. My grandfather used to always give my brothers and I those little round spearmints, and he would hold out the bag for us to pick one out. I specifically remember him doing this in 2017 on my 8th grade graduation day. I used air dry clay in attempt to make the sculpture look the way the mint bag did. It was tattered and had three corners that opened up when you pulled a string. The white and green inks were important to incorporate into this piece because they are the colors of the spearmint candy. The green, especially, creates a focal point, which is important for the reason that my grandfather is Irish, wears the color green all the time, and the color green symbolizes him to me. The striped pattern is also important because that is the way the spearmint candies were patterned.

On Longing Assignment

"To have a souvenir of the exotic is to possess both a specimen and a trophy."

This is a photo I took of a shark tooth that I found at Guana Reserve Beach. This photo reminded me of this quote because it is a real shark tooth that came from a real shark that I found while walking and searching in nature.

"The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental, and the three dimensional into the miniature, that which can be enveloped  by the body."

I chose this image of a miniature Alpaca souvenir for this quote because it fits perfectly. I got this alpaca souvenir from an alpaca sanctuary in Vermont, and it is a miniature alpaca made from real alpaca wool.

"The place of origin must remain unavailable for desire to be generated."

This is a photo of the lake in my hometown named Lake Quannapowitt. I chose this photo because this is a lake that is not allowed to be swam in, and many of the sand areas surrounding it are blocked off, yet people still tend to hang out around it. This fits with the quote because although the lake is unavailable, it creates a desire to be there.

Organic Sculpture

Out of the Blue

Wooden sticks, white thread, Winsor and Newton inks, masking tape, tracing paper, gel medium, hot glue, small wooden slats

10.5" x 7" x 6.5"

Initially I went into this sculpture with no motive or inspiration, I just began doing what came to my mind, and I was pleased with the results. Once the sculpture was constructed, it was still colorless, but I felt really drawn to add blue to the piece. I ended up using blue and purple inks for the color, and this color combination reminds me of the ocean and ocean life, especially at night. The little crinkles on the corners were made from crumpled up tracing paper which I then painted over with gel medium to harden each piece. I believe that these pieces resemble coral, and other underwater plant life. The complexity of the piece and the different directions it goes in now represent the complexity of the ocean and the different directions that ocean life tend to move in. I also feel as though the tracing paper could look like actual paper, representing litter in the ocean, and each stick going in a different direction symbolizes the paths that ocean life take to free themselves of the litter areas. Normally when creating I tend to start off with an inspiration, but with this piece I just went straight in with no inspiration, which I think I'd like to try again.

Visual Symbols

Pigs

Air dry clay, straight pin and Winsor & Newton inks

6.5" x 3" x 2"

The Prosperity Pool

Air dry clay and Winsor & Newton Inks

7" x 3.5" x 2.5"

My goal with each of these visual symbol sculptures was to communicate two opposite ideas that relate to each other. Inspired by capitalism and American greed, the clay sculpture entitled Pigs is meant to represent the "rich" and money-hungry people of society, and the extreme capitalists of America. This differs from the clay sculpture entitled The Property Pool, as this sculptures purpose is to represent success and prosperity in a positive light through the lucky cat, which originated in Japanese cultures. The pig in the Pigs sculpture represents a greedy American, perhaps someone rich or someone who works for the government. This was my reason for incorporating the business suit. The "X" eyes represent the death of personality and personal interest lost when one becomes so obsessed with money, hence the giant dollar sign stabbing through the pigs head. In the The Prosperity Pool sculpture, the cat symbolizes good luck, the way it is used in Japanese culture. The koi fish surrounding the cat symbolize strength, prosperity, love and courage, and they are arranged around the cat to create a feeling of being surrounded by success, or manifesting success. The cat and the koi fish are set up in a pond to emphasize the phrase "swimming in success". These pieces allowed me to explore positive and negative ideas surrounding money and success, as well as a different culture.

"According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the symbol as we now know it “first occurs in the 1770s, appearing in manuscript documents of English-Americans who had business dealings with Spanish-Americans.” It then “starts to appear in print after 1800” (though according to a plaque in Scotland it was cast in type as early as 1797)."

"Koi is a homophone for another word that means “affection” or “love” in Japanese; koi are symbols of love and friendship in Japan among many other symbols. Koi are becoming a universal symbol of peace all over the world."
Lucky cats
The lucky cat meaning is one of good luck bestowed on its owner. This popular Japanese cat figurine, Maneki Neko, is also known as the beckoning cat.
